Acne Grading I-IV
Understanding the types of acne is vital to treating acne successfully. Many attempts to treat acne fail due to lack of knowledge of the different Acne Grading Types. The various forms of acne can be molded to fit in the following classification system:
Grade I acne – Mild Acne
This is the most common type of acne. It is made up of a few crops of whiteheads and blackheads. It forms because skin oil, called sebum, along with old skin cells block the pores of the skin. Mild acne appears most often on the forehead, nose, and chin.
Grade II acne – Moderate Acne
This type of acne usually blends inflammatory changes and comedone (whitehead or blackhead), with few pustules but no scaring. Moderate acne is caused by blocked skin pores and growth of bacteria on the skin, leading to inflammation, redness and pain. Treatment for this type of acne includes both antibiotics and prevention of comedone formation.
Grade III acne – Moderate to Severe Acne
The presence of comedone lesions, pustules, papules, and scaring characterize Grade III acne. There is evidence of inflammation and redness of the skin and this may cause pain. Ideally, Grade III acne should be treated by a medical professional. Prescription topical agents, antibiotics, and medical grade skin care is often needed to treat this type of acne. Treatment ranges from 8 weeks to 6 months for complete resolution of the symptoms.
Grade IV acne – Severe Acne
This is certainly the most severe form of acne. Multiple pustules, cysts, and nodular abscess formation with scaring characterizes this form of acne. Treatment, at this stage, must be handled by a medical professional or skin care expert. Prescription medications, medical grade skin care products, topical or oral antibiotics, and laser therapy are used in combination to treat this condition.
